Breaking in shoes is a pain in the backside – but breaking in a new pair of Doc Martens is genuinely nightmarish. They are as stubborn and tough as they are timeless. I picked mine up from Amazon for £65 which is way less than in-store which is over £100. I did a lot of research on how to break in Doc Martens so I thought I would share some of the tips I picked up and what worked for me.
Take it Slowly
I can’t emphasise this enough, start off slowly if you’re trying to break in doc martens. Wear them in your house for a few hours at a time – I recommend doing this for a week or two before venturing out of the house. When you do venture out I wore them to and from work before doing weekend stints.
Treat them Kindly
Whilst there are a lot of different pieces of advice on how to treat them – some people say it’s best to soak them in water etc. The best thing you can invest in is some of the Wonder Balsam which will help soften and nourish the leather.
Stretch them Gently
There are some people who have written that to break in doc martens you need to hit them with a hammer, run over them with a car. But honestly I was a little more gentle than that – before each wear I would tread down the backs of the shoes and bend the leather across the toes.
I managed to break in my Docs so much that I climbed a mountain in them, have spent hours walking around cities in them and honestly love them. I highly recommend picking up a pair but be prepared to be patient.
